Empowering Young Minds: School Children Connect with Agriculture at Farm 2 School Event

September 2024

Wednesday 18

Nukualofa, Kingdom of Tonga (September 18-19, 2024): Pacific Farmer Organisations together with co-hosts, the Growers Federation of Tonga, Mainstreaming of Rural Development Innovation Tonga Trust and Nishi Trading are excited to announce the 2024 Farm 2 School event, set to take place on September 18th and 19th in the Kingdom of Tonga. The event brings together practitioners from around the region to collaborate on Farm 2 School initiatives.

The program of the two-day event will comprise a series of interactive workshops aimed at providing practical knowledge in key areas such as the development and maintenance of school gardens, integrating farm education into school curricula, and implementing sustainable school feeding programs that support local agriculture while providing healthy meals to students.

The event will focus on hands-on activities and engagement. A hosted school lunch prepared with locally sourced ingredients will demonstrate the practical application of school feeding programs, followed by a School Garden Work Day, offering participants a chance to apply the previous day’s information in one of Tonga’s school learning gardens. The event will conclude with a training session for teachers and educators, designed to arm them with the tools necessary to incorporate effectively agricultural concepts into their teaching practices.

The event represents a significant opportunity for those involved in both agriculture and education to learn from one another, build new skills, and create plans that will enhance the integration of sustainable agricultural practices within educational settings across the Pacific.

The event is supported by with Farmers’ Organisations for Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific’ (FO4ACP) programme, a joint initiative funded by the European Union (EU), the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Pacific Farmer Organisations (PFO). The FO4ACP programme aims to boost incomes, enhance food security and nutrition, and improve the livelihoods of organised smallholder and family farmers in the ACP region.
