Climate Adaptation Day 2024: Showcasing Agriculture Innovation at Nishi Trading

September 2024

Nukualofa, Kingdom of Tonga – September 20, 2024 – Pacific Farmer Organisations, the Growers Federation of Tonga, Mainstreaming of Rural Development Innovation Tonga Trust, and Nishi Trading are hosting an event dedicated to demonstrating effective strategies for sustainable agriculture in response to changing climate conditions. Scheduled for September 20th, 2024, this event will highlight how innovative farming practices can significantly contribute to environmental sustainability and agricultural resilience.

The day is set to commence with a tour of Nishi Trading’s farming operation, recognised for its approaches to agriculture that align with modern climate adaptation strategies. A key feature of the tour will be the official opening of the Coolstore and Solar Project. This new facility represents a major advancement in renewable energy utilisation within the agricultural sector, showcasing a practical implementation that reduces carbon footprints while promoting energy self-sufficiency.

Furthermore, the event will facilitate a series of talks “Impact Stories from the Region.” Various speakers will share compelling accounts of local and regional initiatives aimed at adapting to the worst impacts of climate change. These stories will not only underline the effectiveness of targeted environmental efforts but also motivate participants by sharing examples and creating partnerships around new technologies and projects aimed at mitigating climate-change related problems.

As climate change continues to pose significant challenges to traditional farming practices, the Climate Adaptation Day aims to serve as a platform for learning, discussion, and inspiration. By showcasing tangible solutions and fostering a dialogue on sustainable agricultural practices, this event is designed to empower farmers, policymakers, and environmental advocates to take actionable steps toward more resilient agricultural systems.

The event is supported by Climate Resilient Farming in the Pacific Islands (CRF-PI) and the Farmers’ Organizations for Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific (FO4ACP) Program. This joint initiative, funded by the Australian Government, the European Union (EU), the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and Pacific Farmer Organisations (PFO), aims to strengthen climate and disaster resilience for the Pacific Islands.
