Havelu, Tongatapu – Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u officially opened three new floriculture nurseries at the MORDI base in Havelu, Tongatapu, this week. The nurseries, sheltering thousands of vibrant orchids and anthuriums, aim to elevate the floriculture industry in Tonga and provide sustainable livelihoods for rural women.
A Flourishing Future for Tongan Floriculture
The nurseries boast an impressive collection of 3,000 orchids of seven varieties with 45 different colors. These were propagated by MORDI Tonga staff over the years, with initial contributions from South Sea Orchids. Additionally, the nurseries house 7,000 Anthuriums in 17 vibrant varieties.
Empowering Rural Women
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Seula’s Johansson Fua, Chair of MORDI Tonga, emphasized the transformative impact this initiative will have on rural women. The nurseries will provide them with the tools and knowledge necessary to build sustainable economic livelihoods through floriculture.
International Collaboration for Development
Dr. Candra Samekto, IFAD Country Director for the Pacific Islands, reiterated IFAD’s commitment to empowering rural communities and fostering sustainable development across the region. This collaboration between MORDI Tonga and IFAD is a testament to that commitment.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Guest speaker Aileen Burness, a pioneer in Fiji’s commercial floriculture industry, shared her experience co-founding South Sea Orchids. She encouraged Tongan women to collaborate and overcome challenges to elevate the regional floriculture industry and create more livelihood opportunities for themselves.
The opening of these nurseries marks a significant step towards a flourishing floriculture industry in Tonga. With the Queen’s support, international collaboration, and the dedication of rural women, these nurseries have the potential to not only beautify Tonga but also empower its communities.
