Pacific Farmer Organisations Appoints First Chairwoman

December 2025

Wednesday 18

Nadi, Fiji (December 18th 2025): Pacific Farmer Organisations (PFO) has reached an important milestone with the appointment of its first-ever Chairwoman, Mrs. Aileen Burness, marking a new chapter in the organisation’s leadership.

Mrs. Burness becomes the third Chair of PFO and the first woman to hold the position, a significant moment as the organisation looks ahead to 2026, the United Nations International Year of the Woman Farmer.

She is widely respected across Fiji and the Pacific region for her longstanding contribution to agriculture, particularly in floriculture. Together with her late husband, Mr. Don Burness, she has played a key role in supporting farmer organisations and advancing agricultural development in several Pacific countries. Known for her strong work ethic, practical leadership, and commitment to results, Mrs. Burness brings deep experience and dedication to the role.

PFO also acknowledges the leadership and service of outgoing Chairman, Mr. Minoru Nishi, who has served on the Board since the organisation’s establishment 12 years ago. Mr. Nishi has stepped down from the Chair role but will continue to serve on the Board, providing continuity and ongoing support. PFO extends its sincere gratitude for his more than a decade of commitment and leadership.

Pacific Farmer Organisations warmly welcomes Mrs. Burness as Chairwoman and looks forward to her leadership as the network continues its mission to empower farmers and strengthen farmer organisations across the Pacific.
